It's now an extra 12cm deep so the young owls have a bit more space to move around and exercise when they are fledging. We are still working on taking new photos of the updated box so the photos show the box with the old smaller landing platform and old hatch closure.\u003c\/b\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"no-column\"\u003eWhen fitting inside, we suggest it should be mounted high up (at least 3 metres if possible). Near the apex of a roof is ideal, providing there is enough ventilation to avoid overheating when the sun shines on the roof. Please ensure that the owls have permanent access to the roof space, and that the entrance to the box is in full view of any visiting owls. When siting a box outside there are a number of factors to consider which are likely to contribute to how attractive the box is to barn owls. For siting outside we recommend that the box is at least 4.5 metres high. To minimise the risk of overheating it is best to site the box somewhere shaded that avoids too much direct sunshine (especially in the middle of the day). To reduce rain being blown into the box, if possible face the box away from the prevailing wind. The owl box has a specially drilled backplate providing fixing holes above and below the nesting box and oversized holes to accommodate ropes for hauling the nesting box up the tree and locating it. Our barn owl box has been carefully designed and utilises integral tags on the panels which results in a robust and rigid owl box which still only weighs approx. 8kg.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"no-column\"\u003eBarn Owl boxes need to be cleaned out periodically as over each nesting season pellets and debris will accumulate. If this is left to build up over several years the volume of the box will be reduced and the young barn owls will be able to climb out of the box earlier than they should. This Barn Owl Nest Box features a double inspection hatch allowing full access to the whole floor area facilitating cleaning or inspection from either side of the bird box.
