New Bug Box Kit now available
Posted: Jan 16 2017
We’ve recently expanded our range of box kits with a new bug box kit. As with our other flat packed box kits, the box comes individually packed including precision cut wooden panels (FSC plywood), nails, screw and sandpaper, along with easy to follow instructions. You just need a hammer and screwdriver to assemble the box. Ideal for kids (and adults too!), they are available singly or as packs of ten or thirty.
The completed bug box has two compartments to attract different beneficial insects to your garden, school or yard. The lower part of the box has been designed to attract solitary bees. It should be filled with lots of hollow sticks, lengths of bamboo or even cut up straws. Once you’ve collected your sticks, cut them to the right length and fill the lower part of the box with the hollow ends pointing outward. Once the box is outside, watch and wait, hopefully solitary bees will lay their eggs in the hollow sticks then seal them up with mud which they collect.
The upper part of the box is great for providing somewhere dry and protected with lots of crevices for ladybirds to tuck themselves away during the winter when they hibernate. Fill the top of the box with something like pine cones, twigs or straw which will give ladybirds and lacewings plenty of places to hide.
These bug boxes make a great basis for a school, youth or wildlife group activity, as not only does the box need nailing/screwing together, but collecting the sticks and pine cones etc. to fill the two compartments can involve sending kids outside on a mini scavenger hunt! The bug boxes are made from untreated exterior plywood which can be painted or decorated to extend the life of the box and create a unique box.
